Current population of Cape Verde is 492 thousand people
Praia, Cape Verde, 14 July - Cape Verde has a population of 201 000 inhabitants in 1960, when the completion of the first population census in the archipelago, to 492 thousand in 2010, said this week at the beach the president of the National Institute of Statistics ( INE), António Duarte.
On the occasion of World Population Day, July 11, Antonio Duarte characterized the Cape Verdean population as "very young", with an average age of 26.8 years, and 54% of the population is under 25 years old and most live in urban areas (62%).
The average fertility rate of the Cape Verdean families is 4.2 children per woman, though there is also that there is a considerable increase in life expectancy at birth is 74 years.
For Antonio Duarte, the country has also given "important steps" in the field of population policy, which means that Cape Verde is on track to achieve most Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Among the gains, the President of INE pointed out that the illiteracy rate, which was 25.2% in 2000, is currently at about 17%, the same happened in relation to indicators of sexual and reproductive health.
The level of maternal and infant mortality has been "reduced dramatically" in recent years, the president also indicated the INE.
