Cape Verde wants to extend the area of maritime jurisdiction

Praia, Cape Verde, 22 June - Cape Verde and five other African countries should start in October, the collection of seismic data and hydrographic, under the proposed extension of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles, said Monday in Praia Director-General for Global Affairs of Cape Verde.

At the opening of the second sub-regional meeting of the Liaison Committee for Cooperation on the Establishment of the Outer Limits of the Continental Shelf from Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal and Mauritania, Carlos Semedo stated that the meeting would go along three days, examine the draft additional protocol to the agreement on technical and financial cooperation, signed on September 21, 2010 among the six African countries.

The survey data will be done jointly between the six countries with technical and financial assistance from Norway, which will provide a ship for the mission.

"From March 2012 we will have this information, which are collected in the seas, and then each country will create its commission to interpret these data and provide the file to be submitted to the Commission on the Limits of the United Nations," advanced.

According to Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Cape Verde, José Luis Rocha is not yet clear whether the dossier will be made jointly or individually, but Cape Verde wants to complete the process before the deadline, which is in 2013 .
