Portugal provides funding to build three dams in Cape Verde
Praia, Cape Verde, 21 March – Portugal has provided funding for construction of the Salineiro, Faveta and Saquinho dams, on the Cape Verdean archipelago the minister for the Environment, Rural Development and Marine Resources, José Maria Veiga said Friday in Praia.
“We have been informed that the proposal has been signed off and that the companies will be notified and the funds deposited in their respective bank accounts,” the minister said, cited by Cape Verdean news agency Inforpress.
The dams to be built on the rivers of Salineiro, in the Ribeira Grande de Santiago municipality, Faveta, in São Salvador do Mundo and Charco/Saquinho, in Santa Catarina, a part of the government’s “new agriculture” policy that has been adapted in the national development plan and the strategic agricultural development plan.
With the construction of these dams, by 2015 75 million cubic metres per year are expected to be distributed, which will mainly be used in agri-livestock activities, thus improving the integration of these activities in the process of economic development.
According to José Maria Veiga, at the moment, via a credit line provided by Portugal, construction contracts worth 5.7 billion Cape Verdean escudos (US$71.8 million) are underway.
As well as the three dams, a total of 70 boreholes will be drilled on almost all the islands, 19 dykes will be built on Maio island, 10 on Boa Vista and five water collection and pumping systems will also be built.
