President of the African Union Conference

Jorge Carlos Fonseca participates at the 18th ordinary session of the Conference of the African Union at the end of January in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In Cape Verde is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the meeting which will vote on the new leadership of the African Union and for which the country has not yet taken an official position.

The African Union Conference takes place January 30 and 29, in the Ethiopian capital, and has the presence of the Chief of State of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, as well as the foreign minister, Jorge Borges, and should be decided this meeting who will take the leadership of the African Union, while the Cape Verdean delegation had not made their position.

"In diplomacy we must be pragmatic, we must be realistic and defend the principles but we have to defend what matters most to Cape Verde. There are at least at this time, but two applications pending a decision will accompany the motivations and listening to the candidates as we have done, "Jorge Carlos Fonseca recently responded to reporters when asked about the meeting.

In Cape Verde, on hearing the head of state, as were two candidates, the Gabonese Jean Ping, who is running for his own succession, and the Minister of Interior of South Africa, Nkozasana Dlamini Zuma.

"We were approached by two applications and possibly a third application that may arise and we will hear the candidates and consider the candidates and the countries that support each of the applications, to take a position bearing in mind the interests of Cape Verde" he explained.

The decision of Cape Verde "is very close to the last moment" as Jorge Carlos Fonseca took the case to be "an exercise in line with the government" to this position for the country to "vote with one voice."

Reacted in the same line, on Tuesday, 24, the prime minister, who "should avoid disputes that may divide the states in Africa" ??and in this sense, advocates a "consensus before the election" as president of the African Union and, therefore, Cape Verde "has not yet decided who will vote."

ddis Ababa is already the foreign minister, Jorge Borges, Jose Maria Neves said as saying that the decision will be made in conjunction with the President who, incidentally, has been "discussing several month "issue.

AU member states will also elect a vice-president of the AU Commission, the Commissioners and the ten members of the Peace and Security.
