Cape Verdean exports rise 33.1 pct in 2010 

Praia, Cape Verde, 17 Feb – Cape Verde's exports rose 33.1 percent in 2010, according to foreign trade figures published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) in the archipelago’s capital, Praia.

According to INE, in 2010 the products most exported by Cape Verde were fish, molluscs and crustaceans, accounting for 40.6 percent of the total, and canned goods, accounting for 39.0 percent.

In the 2009-2010 period there was growth in Cape Verde's exports to all economic zones and Europe remained Cape Verde's largest customer representing 94.1 percent of the total, although this figure is 2.9 percentage points below the figure for the previous year.

Amongst the European countries, Spain is the largest export market for Cape Verde, accounting for around 68.3 percent of total exports in 2010, with Portugal in second place with 24.9 percent of the total.

Cape Verde's imports in 2010 rose by 10 percent against the previous year, with Europe continuing to be the archipelago’s main supplier, with 79.1 percent of the total (as compared to 78.8 percent the previous year).

In 2010 Portugal consolidated its leadership amongst Cape Verde's European suppliers, with 45.5 percent of total Cape Verdean imports, followed by the Netherlands, with 13.5 percent.

Cape Verde’s imports from China rose by 158.6 percent, whilst those from Portugal, the Netherlands and France rose by 18.4 percent, 11.6 percent and 27.3 percent, respectively.
