Fishing dock in Cape Verdean capital to undergo refurbishment

Praia, Cape Verde, 17 Jan – The fishing dock in the Cape Verdean capital of Praia is to undergo refurbishment work as part of the Regional Fishing Project for West Africa, which covers nine states in the sub-region, the Cape Verdean press reported.

This World Bank project Cape Verde will provide US$8 million and, as well as refurbishment of the fishing dock, in the electricity and water supply and introduction of the sale of fish at a fish market, also includes construction in Santiago of a shipyard of semi-industrial fishing vessels and installation of an ice factory on Sal or Boa Vista islands.

The project aims to achieve three overall goals – manage fishing in a sustainable way, reduce illegal fishing in the Cape Verde Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and increase the contribution of endogenous resources to local economies.

As well as contributing to fishing practices and fish sales in better conditions, the programme being analysed, according to Aníbal Medina, the project’s manager in Cape Verde, hopes to boost methods of combating illegal fishing, which affects the sustainable management of the sector.
