Cape Verde will boost banana production on the island of Santiago

Praia, Cape Verde, 3 June - The first phase of the project to revive the cultivation of bananas on the island of Santiago has already started and this year will be made to more than 15,000 banana plants reported in Praia news agency cable Verdean Inforpress.

The National Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (INIDA) and the delegation of the Ministry of Environment, Housing and Spatial Planning in San Lorenzo and Santa Cruz Bodies are responsible for this project.

Speaking to Inforpress, the technique of the National Institute of Agricultural Research and Development (INIDA), Nora Silva, said that at this moment is in the preparation phase of launching the tender for the construction of infrastructure, including reservoirs and the acquisition of plants.

The new banana varieties will be imported, assured Nora Silva, who declined to identify countries importing these species, for now.

This project is part of a program to revitalize the banana crop and diversification of agricultural production on the island of Santiago, 600 000 euros financed by the European Union and 100 000 euros by the government of Cape Verde.

The project aims at the revival of the banana crop by introducing in vitro associated with new irrigation technologies, aimed at combating major pest of banana.
