Thomas Cook begins operating in Cape Verde

Great Britain’s oldest and second-largest tourism company, Thomas Cook, has for the first time included the island of Boa Vista in its Winter 2011 and Spring 2012 offerings.

According to website visaonews.com, the company also announced that, beginning in November 4, it will offer weekly direct flights every Friday between the city of Manchester, England and the Cape Verdean island of Boa Vista. The new destination is included in the February 10 edition of the Wintersun – 2011/12 brochure.

In 1840, Thomas Cook, considered the father of modern tourism, promoted the first organized tourist trip in history. Although it was a commercial flop, it is considered to have been a major success in terms of the organization of the first-ever tourist package, as it hinted at the great economic possibilities the business offered. In 1851, he created the travel agency Thomas Cook and Son.

In 1967, he invented the voucher, a document that could be used in hotels for certain services hired and pre-paid through a travel agency.

Thomas Cook currently has some 19,000 employees and a network of more than 800 representations worldwide.
